Happy birthday King Willem-Alexander! The tradition of celebrating the monarch’s birthday in the Netherlands is over 100 years old, but we’re guessing it used to be a lot more formal. Today, Koningsdag is known for the vrijmarkt (free market) which is basically a big yard sale, and oranjegekte (orange madness). When the Dutch say madness, they really mean it. Every year, streets are filled to the brim with Dutchies adopting orange dress, cheerfully enjoying a biertje or two.
