Charging your battery in Scheveningen

Let’s face it, January isn’t the best one of the 12 months in the Netherlands. It’s cold, dark and for some  transition-in-power related reason this year’s January is extra bleak. But screw all that! Time to get out and recharge that inner battery. And what better place to charge it than the beachtown of Scheveningen?

Warming up: Wellness in Scheveningen

Scheveningen has plenty on the menu for the wellness-lovers:

The Kurhaus Spa

The iconic Scheveningen hotel revives it’s splendor of a bygone era and has (re-)opened up a spa last month. Just like the luxurious hotel it has everything you want and more and all done in great style.

The Amrath Kurhaus hotel was originally started as a bathhouse (Kurhaus – kuurhuis) so they know what they’re doing there. If you’ll hurry up you can get a 20% discount for a visit to the new wellness facilities of the Kurhaus.

If for some reason you’re not in for the Kurhaus there are plenty of other options such as:

La Caldera – some very chill massages done the Japanese way.

Zee van Licht (Sea of Light) – an holistic center where you can really really chill out

Max Health – Fitness, yoga, sauna and swimming. They’ve got everything at Max health, very relaxed atmosphere as well in case you’re not looking for a testosterone filled gym.

Just get out there

Indoor-swimming isn’t everything. If you want to get that true feeling of being alive than nothing beats a dive into the North Sea in the Winter. It’s all ‘gezellig’ when diving in at the 1st of January at the New Year’s Dive, but diving in completely solo just gives you that all-alone and refreshing feeling we sometimes so desperately seek in this busy world.
Feel like having fun? With kids? Just rolling off the dunes is also an option. Plain old-timey fun, costs nothing and guaranteed to make you (disclaimer: don’t break your arms, or smile will not appear on face).
Near Scheveningen’s pretty dunes are some good looking forests which make for the perfect hiking terrain. As you can see it’s full of surprises:

Surf’s up!

If there’s any place in the Netherlands to go surfing it’s Scheveningen. And think about it, besides the warming sun the Netherlands has everything to be a surfing walhalla. A sandy beach, loads of wind and good waves.

If you’re not already an avid surfer there’s one spot in particular in Scheveningen to pick up this cool sport. Hart Beach is somewhat of a surfing village inside Scheveningen with camps, courses, possible parties and everything else you could want to learn and enjoy surfing.

Good food

Not really the kind of person for really cold dips? Or want to reward yourself after a long walk? Then actually reward your inner person with what it only wants anyways: good food. Stuff yourself with chocolate at the apty named “Meneer Chocola” in the Keizerstraat.

Leave the known boulevard for just once and venture out to the nice port-area. Especially worth mentioning is the pop-up restaurant there called ‘Zeevlam”. Besides being temporary and delicious they also can boast a pretty awesome view:

And don’t forget to have a herring. The ‘haring‘ is a must-eat in the Netherlands and if it had an official hometown it would be Scheveningen. Although we’re still nowhere near ‘vlaggetjesdag’ you can get this raw and fishy treat anywhere in Scheveningen.

Enjoy the view!

Scheveningen is one of the most instagrammed places of the Netherlands. No surprise there; iconic buildings, sunsets and a beach – makes sense. Buitengewoon Scheveningen collects the best of all the Scheveningen shots out there, tag yours with #btngwn to get shared by them. The one that receives the most <3’s in 2017 will be the winner of the year! Here are some contenders:

PS. Before I forget, there’s tons of things to do in Scheveningen in the winter and unlimited opportunities for some classy pictures of the beach town.
