Today is Tuesday 15th of October and this is Frank Kool with your daily update.
The day started off with a collective scare at the DutchReview headquarters: word has spread that a Russian news-site had picked up on our picking on Putin. Since none of us are well versed in the Russian language, we could only make out two things: the name of our website repeated throughout the article and a photo of Putin dressed in his Judo gi. But if Google Translate is to be believed, they did little more than summarize our previous article about the ongoing diplomatic tensions between The Netherlands and Russia. So we are safe. For now.
On a more serious note (or not), the Dutch newspaper Trouw made unintentional funniness today when they published a short article about a murder committed in Amsterdam this summer. Amidst the eternally reoccurring discussion about whether or not Zwarte Piet is racist, the newspaper matter-of-factly speaks of “two negroid males who fled the scene into the direction of the nearest Kentucky Fried Chicken”. Stay classy, Trouw.
More positive news on another fight for equality: if research is to be believed, then a Finnish social program has the power to reduce bullying at school by almost 50%. A total of 99 elementary schools in The Netherlands, with over 10,000 students between them, participated in a study where 66 used the Finnish KiVa method for over a year while the other 33 schools served as a control group. The results showed that the children who were exposed to the KiVa method developed more empathy and now spent more energy on making friends instead of thinking of new ways to perfect the Atomic Wedgie. Bullying was also reduced in the control group, but by a smaller margin. Professor of Sociology René Veenstra from the university of Groningen hypothesized that this may be due to media attention to recent suicides committed by children who were bullied.
So much for the Dutch news of today. And now for the weather report:
