Earthquake of magnitude 3.4 hits Groningen this morning

There was a major earthquake with a magnitude of 3.4 that hit Groningen this morning. Its epicenter was at a village called Westerwijtwerd, in the municipality of Loppersum, reports NOS.

According to seismologist Läslo Evers of KNMI, this earthquake is in the top 3 of the worst earthquakes to hit Groningen. The most powerful one happened back in 2012 in the province of Huizinge, and had a magnitude of 3.6.

 

The State Supervision of Mines (SSM) will be collecting data to determine the extent of the damage caused by the earthquake. This is also done so that more measures can be undertaken so that it reduces the risk of more earthquakes from happenings.

Although its magnitude is high, emergency services have no yet been deployed in the region.
