Official! King Willem-Alexander has invited Trump to visit The Netherlands

The King has spoken! King Willem-Alexander of The Netherlands has officially invited Donald Trump, the president of the US to come visit this beautiful flat land of cheese in August.

Has he accepted the invitation? We don’t know if he will. But this invitation is confirmed by the Government Information Service after De Telegraaf reported on this. The American ambassador has also confirmed with NOS that this is true.

According to NOS, the king doesn’t usually extend an invitation to anyone who isn’t already open to it. Trump has already rejected one invitation before because apparently his “agenda did not allow it”. This was for the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES) happening between 3 to 5 June in The Hague. In his stead, his daughter Ivanka Trump will be attending.

Looks like someone is playing hard to get!

Why will Trump be visiting The Netherlands?

He has been invited to pay tribute to the liberation of The Netherlands. NOS says that he will be commemorate the Battle of the Scheldt on August 31 in Terneuzen, which happened 75 years ago during World War II. This battle was crucial as it the allied powers could take back the shipping route to Antwerp, which was “used to supply the Allies in north-west Europe”. It was an important event in the liberation of The Netherlands.

As part of this tribute, Trump will also be given a very historic American flag, which was carried to Normandy on June 6,1944 (D-day).

We know exactly what a Trump visit will bring – memes and jokes about the president, while pulling focus away from the tribute to the fallen soldiers. It’s sad that this will happen, but hopefully people will still pay attention to the battle, and why the commemoration is happening.

  1. No! You do not need to have this fake president anywhere near the wonderful Netherlands. He is not a representation of the USA. Please, please reconsider your invitation and invite someone worthy of the event and your country.

  2. Inviting a draft dodger and fraudster (amongst other things) to military tributes is dishonouring the men and women who gave their lives in the war. Good grief if he doesn’t come he’ll probably send his money laundering daughter and son-in-law. smh
