Are you ready to step into the Southern Hemisphere without even leaving the Netherlands?

On Saturday, June 21, and Sunday, June 22, 2025, Wereldmuseum Leiden will once again bring the spirit of New Zealand to the Netherlands with its annual celebration of Matariki, the Māori New Year.

This year’s special edition also marks the 15th anniversary of the arrival of two traditional Māori waka (canoes) in the Netherlands, celebrating the partnership between the museum, Toi Māori Aotearoa, and The Dutch Waka Crew.

To celebrate, Wereldmuseum Leiden is preparing heaps of exciting activities.

What can we expect?

In Māori culture, Matariki is a time for reflection, renewal, and reconnection. In this spirit, we can expect:

  • Waka ceremonies: Watch the ceremonial launching of the waka, symbolising the shared heritage and connection between cultures. 🛶
  • Cultural exchange: Chat with Māori guests from New Zealand and the UK as they share stories, traditions, and customs. 🇳🇿
  • Workshops and lectures: Participate in hands-on workshops and attend lectures to deepen your understanding of Māori culture. 🧡
