Meet the DutchReview Team
Bike-lovers, cheese-eaters, clog-wear— wait, maybe not.
Either way, the DutchReview team unites ourselves through our different experiences, knowledge, and tips that come from living in the Netherlands.
Abuzer van Leeuwen
Founder & Managing DirectorAbuzer founded DutchReview a decade ago because he thought expats needed it and wanted to make amends for the Dutch cuisine. He has a Masters in Political Science and IT but somewhere always wanted to study history or good old football. He also a mortgage in the Netherlands and will happily tell you too how to get one. Born and raised in Rotterdam, Abuzer now lives in Leiden but is always longing back to his own international year in Italy.
Samantha Dixon
Director of Content and SocialSam has over six years experience writing about life in the Netherlands and leads the content team at DutchReview. She originally came to the Netherlands to study in 2016 and now holds a BA (Hons.) in Arts, a BA (Hons.) in Journalism, and (almost) a Masters in Teaching. She loves to write about settling into life in the Netherlands, her city of Utrecht, learning Dutch, and jobs in the Netherlands — and she still can’t jump on the back of a moving bike (she's learning!).
Sarah O'Leary
Senior EditorBefore becoming the Senior Editor of DutchReview, Sarah was a fresh-faced international looking to learn more about the Netherlands. Since moving here in 2017, Sarah has added a BA in English and Philosophy (Hons.), an MA in Literature (Hons.), and over three years of writing experience at DutchReview to her skillset. When Sarah isn't acting as a safety threat to herself and others (cycling), you can find her trying to sound witty while writing about some of the stickier topics such as mortgages and Dutch law.
Jana Vondráčková
Business DeveloperOriginally from the Czech Republic, Jana moved to the Netherlands for her studies. Seven years in the flattest country in Europe has brought her a Masters in Environmental Management, experience in content creation, projects, partnership coordination, and about 20 ideas on how to deal with Dutch winter blues (most of which didn’t work). Her love for the local cycling culture is undying — but she finally knows better than to hop on a bike in a typical Dutch downpour.
Liana Ann Pereira
EditorLiana juggles her role as an Editor with wrapping up a degree in cognitive linguistics and assisting with DutchReview's affiliate portfolio. Since arriving in the Netherlands for her studies in 2018, she's thrilled to have the 'write' opportunity to help other internationals feel more at home here — whether that's by penning an article on the best SIMs to buy in NL, the latest banking features, or important things to know about Dutch health insurance.
Lyna Meyrer
Senior WriterSay 'hoi' to Lyna, our Senior Writer at DutchReview! Fueled by a love for writing, social media, and all things Dutch, she joined the DR family in 2022. Since making the Netherlands her home in 2018, she has collected a BA in English Literature & Society (Hons.) and an RMA in Arts, Literature and Media (Hons.). Even though she grew up just a few hours away from the Netherlands, Lyna remains captivated by the guttural language, quirky culture, and questionable foods that make the Netherlands so wonderfully Dutch.
Beatrice Scali
Editorial InternFive years after spreading her wings away from her beloved Genova, Bia has just landed at DutchReview as an editorial intern. She has lived in China, Slovenia, Taiwan, and - natuurlijk - the Netherlands, where she just completed her Bachelor’s in International Studies. When she’s not reciting unsolicited facts about the countries she’s lived in, she is writing them down. Her biggest dreams include lobbying the Dutch government into forcing oliebollen stands to operate year-round, and becoming a journalist. In this order.
Lina Leskovec
Editorial InternLina moved from Slovenia to the Netherlands in 2021. Three years in Amsterdam got her a Bachelor’s in Political Science and made her an advocate for biking in the rain. Her main expertise include getting the most out of her Museumkaart purchase and finding the best coffee spots in Amsterdam.
Ada Dolanay
Editorial InternAda was born in Turkey, but spent almost all her life growing up in Amsterdam. As a third year Literary and Cultural Analysis student, she’s consistently observing, analysing and writing about people and places. After years of experiencing Dutch culture, she remains frustrated at Dutch cuisine, and continues to discover new benches in narrow streets to sit and read on (when the weather decides to be kind).
Contributors
Lottie Gale
Editorial InternLottie joins DutchReview as an editorial intern after gaining a Bachelor’s in English from her native England. She continues to pursue all things literature in her MA Literature Today at Utrecht University. She is loving life here, and the ever-looming rainclouds often make it feel like a home from home. Lottie arrived to complete her studies and hone her writing skills — she’ll stay for the Dutch tranquility, tulips and tompouce.
Ellen Ranebo
WriterAs someone half Swedish and half Irish who has lived in the Netherlands, the UK, and attended an American School, Ellen is a cocktail of various nationalities. Having had her fair share of bike accidents, near-death experiences involving canals, and miscommunications while living here (Swedish and Dutch have deceptively similar words with very different meanings), she hopes to have (and document) plenty more in future.
Júlia de Oliveira Moritz
WriterJúlia was born in Brazil, but she’s been away for more than half her life. At five years old, she moved to Nigeria, and at 14, she came to the Netherlands. She came for her education and stayed for… something. She’s not sure if that something is the vibrant springtime or the live music bars. All she knows is that this is her new home, at least for now.
Christopher Conway
Editorial InternChris hails from the beautiful (and occasionally rainy) Donegal, Ireland. With a degree in History and English under his belt, he’s now diving into an MA in Journalism. Having grown up in Ireland, he’s no stranger to a bit of rain, so the Dutch weather feels just like home to him. In fact, when it comes to Dutch rain, it’s like Ireland but with more bikes and fewer sheep!
Katrien Nivera
EditorThird culture kid Katrien has been working as a writer and editor at DutchReview for over two years, originally moving to the Netherlands as a tween. Equipped with a Bachelor’s in communication and media and a Master’s in political communication, she’s here to stay for her passion for writing, whether it’s current Dutch affairs, the energy market, or universities. Just like the Dutch, Katrien lives by her agenda and enjoys the occasional frietje met mayo — she just wishes she could grow tall, too.
Rachel Zagury
Business DevelopmentComing from Isreal, Rachel recently got her master's degree in Leiden. Though technically Dutch, Rachel can't bike and is not a big fan of cheese and herring, but feels at home with the Dutch weather (said no one in the Netherlands ever). While enjoying wandering around, Rachel is also a big fan of reading, travelling, watching anime and eating as many bitterballen as she can!
Simone Jacobs
WriterOriginally from South Africa, Simone is having fun navigating the Dutch language, steep stairs, and bicycles (which she still manages to fall off of with her short, non-Dutch legs). An animal lover at heart, Simone can typically be found under her (growing?) mound of cats, where she uses the opportunity to read, write, and watch video compilations of creatures.
Francesca Burbano
WriterFrancesca is an international at heart but moved to the Netherlands to get her degree in media and communication. While she's not a big fan of the cold weather and biking (for good reason — she's been hit by bikes three times already), she fell in love with the canals, bitterballen, and the 'gezelligheid' of Dutch culture. When she's not writing, you'll find her reading thriller books, hitting her personal records at the gym, and cuddling up with her Ragdoll cat.
Naomi Lamaury
WriterNaomi came to the Netherlands four years ago for her studies with two suitcases and without ever having been to the country or knowing much about it. Now, you can find her eating ‘bitterballen’ and fighting against the Dutch wind on her bike every day like a local. Naomi enjoys writing about what is going on around her alongside a warm cup of coffee.
Lea Shamaa
EditorLea has a passion for writing and sharing new ideas with the world. She enjoys film photography, Wes Anderson movies, fictional books and jazz music. She came to the Netherlands in 2019 for her media studies and has fallen in love with the country and its culture ever since. She loves to ride her bicycle in the city but also feels the need to overtake everyone on the bike lane (she's working on it).
Mihály Droppa
WriterMihály fell in love with (and in) Amsterdam, so he quit his NGO job in Hungary and moved to the Netherlands to become a journalist. His apartment is full of plants and books, two dogs, and a random mouse in the kitchen. You might find him in Vondelpark, where he spends most of his life throwing tennis balls for his vizslas and listening to podcasts. His nickname is Mex — ask him why!
Juni Moltubak
Senior WriterJuni moved to the Netherlands after realizing how expensive tuition fees in the UK are, and never regretted her choice of studying in The Hague. After three years of Political Science, she is ready for a new adventure — an internship at DutchReview! When you don’t see her typing on her laptop she can be found strolling around Haagse Bos or sitting in her lovely garden scrolling through interior design TikToks.
Eva Lakeman
WriterAfter calling Malaysia her home for 19 years, Eva moved to Amsterdam to study literary and cultural analysis. Well, that was the academic theory — in reality it was more like “cultural shock.” Eva’s mastery of life in the Netherlands involved initiation into the rich smorgasbord of nocturnal hangouts, canals, cuisine, and upright and forthright cyclists (who she now rings her bell back at.) When she is not speeding her way through books, she is winding and weaving down endless straatjes, often finding herself, not so quite by chance, in a gezellig music bar!
Gaelle Salem
WriterBorn and raised on the island of Sint Maarten, Gaelle moved to the Netherlands in 2018 to attend university. Still trying to survive the erratic Dutch wind and rain, she has taken up the hobby of buying a new umbrella every month. You can probably find her in the centre of The Hague appreciating the Dutch architecture with a coffee in one hand and a slice of appeltaart in the other.
Christine Stein Hededam
EditorA Dane with a special place in her heart for Minnesota, Christine is now falling in love with everything Dutch. Between finishing her bachelor’s degree, learning Dutch, and doing yoga teacher training, you will find her wandering about the Hague. Always up for visiting new places, she loves to explore the Netherlands with friends and takes pride in scoping out cute cafés (wherein to discuss books, big plans, and food).
Cara Räker
WriterCara moved to the Netherlands at fifteen and she is here to stay! After all, there is so much to love about it, except maybe the bread (as every German will tell you). Next to finishing up her bachelor's degree in European politics (dry), Cara loves to do yoga, swim and cook delicious veggie food.
Jen Lorimer
WriterAn avid tea drinker, Jen was born and raised in Zimbabwe. She moved to Utrecht in 2017 to pursue her history degree. She loves people-watching, canoeing the Utrecht canals, and observing how the Dutch come alive in summer. Having been traumatised by a Dutch circle party, Jen wants to help equip other expats with tips and tricks to survive and thrive in this wonderful flat country.
Chloe Lovatt
WriterA British native, Chloe has a love for other languages and cultures, having lived in Spain before moving to the Netherlands. She is keen to explore the Dutch landscape, cultural spots and -the most important — food! After being here for a few months she already has developed a mild addiction to kibbeling.
Nicole Noi Ogden
WriterHailing from the bustling city of Bangkok, Nicole is a Thai/American international student who came to the Netherlands to study linguistics. When she's not reading books or listening to true crime podcasts, she's normally practicing her singing and guitar skills! She also is attempting to pick up the Dutch language (moeilijk).
Farah Al Mazouni
WriterFarah believes she's been on many adventures during her millennial life, each for a different (sometimes invisible) purpose. The latest adventure whisked her away to Amsterdam for love, and what a magical surprise she found in this city. Armed with imaginary confetti in her pocket, and ready to celebrate all wins, big and small, Farah says "ahla w sahla" or “welcome” to her latest adventure in this wonderland.
Heather Slevin
WriterHeather is a Dublin native, addicted to catching the Irish tram Luas for one stop, and well used to the constant rain and shine. Seeking to swap one concrete city for another (with a few more canals and a friendlier attitude to cyclists) here she is with DutchReview! As a Creative Writing student, she can usually be found sweating over the complicated formatting of her latest poem or deep inside the pages of a book.
Brin Andrews
WriterBrin is an avid ice cream eater from the US, calling Amsterdam home since early 2019. As a lover of mountains, life below sea level has been a bit of an adjustment, but she manages to stay afloat with long runs, wine, and frequent travel. Incidentally, these are a few of her favourite topics to write about.
Emily Burger
WriterEmily grew up in South Africa but has also lived in Egypt, the UK, Canada and now the Netherlands. She first came here for her Bachelors in Arts and Culture at Maastricht University and soon fell in love with the land of canals, clogs and cheese. When she's not daydreaming about sci-fi movies or countries yet to explore, you can find her writing for DutchReview.
Ailish Lalor
EditorAilish was born in Sydney, Australia, but grew up by a forest in south-east Ireland, which she has attempted to replace with a living room filled with plants in The Hague. Besides catering to her army of pannenkoekje planten, Ailish spends her days convincing her friends that all food is better slightly burnt, plotting ways to hang out with dogs and cats, and of course, writing for DutchReview.
Vedika Luthra
WriterVedika was born in India, raised in Poland and moved to the Netherlands to study. Like her nationality, she’s confused about what she likes most, which is why her bachelor’s degree was in liberal arts and sciences. She enjoys writing about all things food-related but likes to mix it up every now and then.
Freya Sawbridge
Writer & Content CreatorFreya was born in Edinburgh but raised in New Zealand (cue every person she meets saying “oh I have always wanted to go there but it’s so far away!”). A restless and curious nature has led her to move countries five times in the last three years in attempt to find a place she can call home. Let's see if the Netherlands is it!
Kavana Desai
EditorKavana is trying to cope with Dutch winters by keeping warm with some tea to drink, while she tries to think of ways to be the youngest person to win that Nobel Prize for Literature. In the meantime, she fills her days with writing for DutchReview, writing her master's thesis on art theft, and writing fiction that will hopefully see the light of day soon.
Chuka Nwanazia
WriterChuka is a professional blogger and freelance writer who studies and works in Amsterdam. He is also the founder and owner of Beejonson Web Content Writers. Chuka enjoys writing about his passions and interests. When Chuka isn’t writing web contents, reading an interesting book or just watching the news and football, he’s probably at a bookstore somewhere trying to score a good book.
Vatsalya Balasubramanian
WriterBorn and bread (carb lover here!) in colourful India, my husband and I came to Holland for a short three months. With three months stretching beyond three years, I now juggle various interests while also trying to balance a temperamental toddler. When not cursing the wind while riding a bike, I write a blog, try different coffee blends and of course, wait for the blink-and-miss Dutch summer.
Jianghan Chang
WriterJianghan has spent her whole life in China except for a one-year exchange program in Leiden University, which caused her addiction to Dutch dairy products. Now wrapping up her degree in Dutch Studies, she aspires to further her education in Europe. Aside from over-analysing film and literature, she also enjoys being an amateur artist whose inspiration is fueled by crippling obsession.
Magdalena Laas
WriterMagdalena Laas is a psychology and education graduate, toying with the idea to eventually obtain her PhD. For now, she's having fun telling stories, be it with words, stills or moving pictures. Born in South Africa, adopted by New Zealand, and welcomed by the United Kingdom, she's currently learning to cycle with an umbrella, in the Netherlands; with her husband, son and well-travelled cat, Juno.
Emma Brown
WriterA famililar face at DutchRevew. Emma arrived in Holland in 2016 for a few weeks, fell in love with the place and never left. Here she rekindled her love of writing and travelling. Now you'll find her eating stroopwafels in the DutchReview office since 2017.
Aurora Signorazzi
WriterAurora is an Italian PhD student from Groningen. She has been living in the Netherlands for two years and is by now familiar with many Dutch habits... But still finds plenty of reasons to be pleasantly (most of the time) amazed by this industrious country and its brutally honest inhabitants!
Laura Corrigan
WriterAn Irish girl studying in the beautiful city of Groningen. With a long time passion for writing and photography and a new found passion for bikes, Saturday markets and Dutch snacks. You'll find her in the Arts Building possibly working, more than likely daydreaming and most definitely drinking tea.
Shaakira Vania
WriterIntroverted extrovert, coconut-obsessed and faux-chef, Shaakira is a recent-ish import into the Netherlands and hails proudly from The Rainbow Nation (South Africa). When not pretending to speak Dutch or explaining the differences between Afrikaans and Dutch, she's a sporadic explorer of the Netherlands and like a classic millennial has few set plans for the "toekomst
Maria Rita Reis
WriterMaria Rita is an ex-International Relations teacher on a lifelong affair with the news. She enjoys reading about light topics such as minorities, terrorism, and war. An immigrant, a polyglot and a very curious human, she's always rooting for the underdog. Keeping up with international politics and understanding the power of language are two of her biggest passions. Not surprisingly, a lot of her time is spent drinking obscene amounts of coffee and laughing at silly linguistics memes.
Anna Holbrook
WriterAnna is an escapee of Brexit Britain living in Amsterdam! Aside from monthly shipments of Yorkshire tea and marmite, she is now a devoted convert to the Dutch way of life. Anna is as an avid writer, traveller and guitar player with an ever-growing record collection.
Carmen Monge

She is ready to share her passion for everything eatable, walkable and enjoyable between canals and windmills. She tries to experience how the locals live by eating local food and hiking around.
Andra Cristiana
WriterAndra is an aspiring copywriter, strongly in love with Amsterdam, but truly hating on the weather. Her skills include creative writing, eating a dinner that says "for 4" all by herself, and emptying Albert Heijn's shelves of Prosecco. She's remarkably good at the last two.
Laila Robles Martínez
WriterLaila is a journalist born and raised in Mexico City, and has lived in Canada (a semester in high school counts, right?), Spain (where she met the love of her life and completed her Master’s Degree in Humanities) and most recently, The Netherlands. She has great passion for exploring new cultures, mothering her beautiful two-year-old son, tasting all kinds of vegan treats and, of course, writing.
Simone Kynaston
WriterSimone lives way up north, where the wind blows harder and there’s an extra language to learn. She’s the world’s slowest cyclist because confident Dutch cyclists scare her and her screams can be heard for miles. When she’s not exploring the country and collecting expat friends along the way, she’s obsessed with finding the most delicious Dutch snacks, and she thinks that joppiesaus is the best invention ever.
James Bogué
WriterAn Englishman fascinated by Homo sapiens and their cultures, and by extension the influence of politics, history, and psychology. But his absolute favourite? The perils of miscommunication (four words that accurately describe his journey with the Dutch language). Besides writing, he enjoys running, cycling and thinking about his next meals; and aspires to write a bestseller and speak at least ten languages.
Fabrizia Sbrega
WriterFabrizia moved to the Netherlands 11 years ago from Italy. After so many years, this country is still able to surprise and amaze her. Amsterdam is a city where you never get bored: it is vibrant, continuously changing and with always something to do. She believes that the Dutch weather, high carb food and their ‘un-Greek’ way of expression is no deterrent...

She has a degree in politics, psychology, law, and economics (in case you were wondering: yes, she is planning on taking over the world). When she’s not writing for DutchReview, she can be found running around town with her analog camera.
Snehal
WriterOften spotted oscillating between extroversion and introversion, Snehal is a chatterbox, wanderlust-er, dancer, reader and a self-proclaimed writer. Born and bred in India, she moved countries to find herself (still in progress). If you talk about food, fashion or football — you have her attention. Natalie Jones
WriterNatalie Jones is a half-Malaysian, half-American Hong-Kong-born woman who whole-heartedly loves leopard sharks. As someone who moved her whole life, she ended her geographical nomadic existence the minute she arrived in Amsterdam — she knew she'd do all she can to make it her home. As she's far too short to locate amongst these tall Dutchies, find her on Dutch review!
Simon Woolcot

Anwesh Marwade
ContributorStraight outta 'Bollywood' Mumbai, Anwesh came to the Netherlands to pursue his masters. Little does he know that exploiting the dutch cafe culture with regular orders of bitterballen every time he goes out for drinks by the beautiful canals, made him fall in love with the country one stroopwafel at a time! When it's not sunny enough for the beach, he's exploring new places or helping out at language cafes.
Lucy Deutekom
WriterA Dutch teacher based in Amsterdam who loves teaching Dutch to newcomers and expats, Lucy always finds it refreshing to learn a newcomer's perspective on typical (and often quirky) Dutch habits. From that starting point, she wrote the fun and easy to read Let's talk Dutch: the way of life in the Netherlands explained through common sayings and expressions.
Joy Harding Rees
WriterJoy hails from Wales but has moved around a bit; Finland, Greece, the U.S, and has now finally landed in Voorburg where she plans to stay put for a while. She loves all things food and drink and is on a quest to find the best bitterballen in the country. You might find her cycling around The Hague, enjoying a walk near the water or with her nose in a book at an independent cafe.
Stefanie Stetson
ContributorStefanie left the United States from California for her American husband’s job — like many trailing spouses. Leaving perpetual sunshine for rain hasn’t been easy, but she enjoys strolling the farmers market for the endless Dutch cheese supply while trying to learn the language. A communications/PR major, Stefanie enjoys the creativity of photography, cooking & writing on her blog. She enjoys traveling and walking her husky, who loves the rain & snow of Groningen way more than she does.
Paola Krasteva
ContributorPaola is almost 24 years old and originally from Bulgaria. She has lived and studied in The Netherlands for almost 5 years. She has started considering plain bread with a slice of cheese a decent meal. She loves being creative, doing sporty stuff, travelling and being adventurous! She has a podcast called Living In The Netherlands and is always seeking to explore more.
