Living in the city of Rotterdam or know somebody who does? As of January 1st 2019, Rotterdam’s residents will be looking at a new health insurance policy which offers a deductible (eigen risico) of ‘just’ 50 euros.
This new policy is a great step forward for vulnerable Rotterdammers. Offered in collaboration with VGZ (a private health insurance company), it will allow residents of Rotterdam to pay only 50 euros excess, rather than 385.

The insurance – which has been named ‘Rotterdampolis’ – also offers a compact package, with lower and less reimbursement. This could be a serious improvement for the people who need it most.
The VGZ will give a 10% discount on both policies. Exactly how much the insurance costs is yet unknown; this will be announced in November 2018 (but the costs for health insurance in the Netherlands have gone up slightly for 2019).
What the government says…
Sven de Langen, Rotterdam alderman, says that the government contributes 10 euro’s per month per inhabitant because some people just can’t afford their payments or excess.
At the moment, the policy is only available to those with a lower income (those who earn up to 130% of the minimum wage). The higher monthly cost of living might sound less appealing to those who are not necessarily in huge need of the healthcare, but this requirement is said to disappear.
DSW just announced their premium for basic insurance as 112 euros per month, but other premiums for coming year’s health insurance will be published soon.
