Both Healthcare and Daycare in the Netherlands are becoming More Expensive

Unfortunately both healthcare and daycare in the Netherlands are becoming more expensive. Here is why and when we can expect the prices to go up.

Healthcare in the Netherlands is becoming more expensive

According to reports, the main reason why healthcare in the Netherlands is becoming more expensive is the increasing costs, and more particularly salaries. The first health insurance company to announce its higher fees is DSW. According to a statement from the company on Tuesday, it will increase its premiums by €4.50 a month starting 2019.

That will take the cost of a basic health insurance package up to €112 a month. The other four big insurance companies in the Netherlands – Zilveren Kruis, VGZ, CZ and Menzis, have until the 12th of November to publish their new fees.

Daycare in the Netherlands is becoming more expensive

The cost of daycare centers in the Netherlands is set to increase by 7 percent due to new government rules. Starting 1st of January 2019, a baby group worker will only be allowed to look after three babies, instead of four as the rules currently allow. According to sector umbrella group Kinderopvang parents will have to pay hundreds of euros more per year because of these changes. This also means that daycare centers will have to employ more staff or turn children away.

As stated by a spokesperson for the social affairs minister, the government does not expect such a large increase. They estimate that the rule change will boost costs up to 4.6 percent, which will be covered by the rise in child benefits. However, according to Kinderopvang despite the increase in child benefits, that will not be enough to compensate the increase in fees.
