Light Pollution in the Netherlands is Significantly Decreasing

The Netherlands is one of the most illuminated countries in the world. However, as of late, light pollution has started to significantly decrease. Here is why this is important.

Light pollution in the Netherlands

According to a study of the 54 largest cities in the Netherlands by Natuur- en  Milieufederaties, most Dutch cities are getting darker. Holland is known to be one of the most illuminated countries because of public street lighting and illuminated advertising. However, despite the substantial light pollution, the environmental federations call this a “turning point” for light pollution in Holland.

According to Natuur- en  Milieufederaties, the darkest cities in the Netherlands are:

  • Stadskanaal in Groningen
  • Dronten in Flevoland
  • Emmen in Drenthe
  • Heerenveen in Friesland.

The most light pollution comes from:

  • Amsterdam
  • Delft
  • The Hague
  • Zoetermeer
  • Rotterdam

Whether the light pollution continues to decrease in the next couple of years will largely depend on businesses. Municipalities and provinces are already making sure that excessive light is dimmed and extinguished whenever and wherever possible. Due to the low cost of LED lighting, however, many companies leave their lights on throughout the whole night.

Why is light pollution bad?

According to Globe at Night, too much light pollution has negative consequences: “It washes out starlight in the night sky, interferes with astronomical research, disrupts ecosystems, has adverse health effects and wastes energy.”

That is why in order to combat light pollution, this Saturday (tomorrow) the federations will hold a ‘Nacht van de Nacht’ for the 14th time. During that night there will be hundreds of events in the dark throughout the Netherlands. Furthermore, hundreds of companies and municipalities will take part in the movement by turning off the lights of buildings and billboards.
