Amsterdam North-South Metro Line is (finally) completed

Done with sitting in the traffic for ours and don’t feel up to putting up with the NS and their trains? Unless you don’t mind biking for 6 hours everyday, we have some good news for you! The Amsterdam North-South Metro Line is (finally) completed!

The Metro line will connect Amsterdam North, Central Station and the city’s historic centre with the business district in the south of the capital.

North-South Line: The Long wait is over

After some long wait that lasted for 15 years (yes, the start date was 2003), The Municipality of Amsterdam announced on January 11 that construction has been completed on the North-South Line.

The idea of having the North-South Line was first discussed in the sixties (no-one recalls exactly when) and the official constructions started a year after.

Ever since then, the construction process of the new subway in Amsterdam was not without its problems. In 2008, there were two incidents of subsidence which caused some damage to the buildings in Vijzelgracht. The difficult conditions of the ground and high water level meant it was necessary to ‘anchor’ tunnel sections to maintain their location.

With the year 2015, the basic construction was complete, and now, in 2018, the Metro line is completely finished. Unfortunately, this was not achieved without a high cost. The bill for the new metro has ended up costing almost triple the original estimate, coming in at a massive 3,1 billion euros. Yikes!

North-South Line Amsterdam: Almost Up and Running

With the opening day getting closer, the testings are also full-speed ahead. Apparently, the current test phase will continue until early summer. After that, there will be a period of integral system testing before the line opens on July 22nd  2018.

We’d say good news! an idea that was planted in the early 60’s is finally getting closer to become a reality. Grab your OV-Chipkaarts!
