A Dutch company is Transforming old cargo Ships into Homes

Transforming old cargo ships into homes is the newest project showcasing once again how innovative Dutch people are. All hail the kings of sustainability! Here is everything you need to know about this awesome project.

Transforming old cargo ships into homes: The Idea

We all knew that the Dutch are very big on innovation and are constantly looking for ways to make their project more sustainable and nature friendly. Well, this new project has proven once again how good the Netherlands is with innovation. The Dutch based company Studio Komma has come up with a new awesome and sustainable project. Their plan is to transform former Dutch cargo ships into sustainable homes. They plan on doing so by implementing the idea of adaptive reuse, which is the process of reusing an old site or building and giving it a new purpose. Due to the old cargo ships’ completely intact exterior shells, these new homes will still look like ships from the outside while serving as houses on dry land.

Transforming old cargo ships into homes: The Project

The project of transforming old cargo ships into homes will bring between six and fourteen new homes. The converted ships will be situated in a public park, the Marine-doc Estate. The ships will be brought onto land and refurbished in order to create good living conditions for their future residents. Aside from already being super sustainable, the ships will also be equipped with solar panels on their roof decks. This ambitious project proves to the world once again that through adaptive reuse, architecture of the past can still be useful in the future. The venture to transform old cargo ships into homes is set to begin by the end of this year.
