Amsterdam has just been named the third-safest city in the world for travellers in 2027, one of nine European destinations in the top 15.

Only Montreal and Zurich bested the Dutch capital in a ranking compiled by US travel insurer Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection.

Amsterdam made the top five in every safety category

Say what you will about the Netherlands’ deadly bike lanes, but the capital was busy snatching up awards, coming in at:

  • #4 for safety from violent crimes,
  • #3 for safety from terrorism,
  • #4 for transportation safety,
  • #5 for overall health measures, and
  • #3 for safety for women/LGBTQIA+/people of colour.

The city’s marginally more popular with Gen Z respondents, who ranked it #3 overall. Millennials, meanwhile, tended to push the capital down a slot to #4.

Here are the safest cities for 2027

If you’re travelling beyond the Dutch capital, these are the safest cities to put on your bucket list:

#1Montreal
#2Zurich
#3Amsterdam
#4Tokyo
#5Reykjavik
#6Oslo
#7Singapore
#8Venice
#9Sydney
#10Honolulu
#11Dublin
#12Copenhagen
#13Barcelona
#14San Fransisco
#15Paris

How do the rankings actually work?

The insurer started by “pulling a list of 38 of the most popular international and domestic cities for US travellers”, then polled over 1,500 survey respondents for their opinions.

Not every opinion made the cut, though — only people who actually visited the cities were allowed to rank them according to safety measures.

Those survey scores were then blended with safe-city indices from Numbeo and The Economist, along with city ratings from GeoSure Global.
