No more texting and cycling! A new law is being put into motion soon

Very soon texting and cycling will be forbidden by law in the Netherlands. Here is when the ban begins.

No more texting and cycling in the Netherlands starting next year

Starting from the 1st July 2019 it is forbidden to call or text while on your bicycle. According to reports, Minister Van Nieuwenhuizen has prepared a proposal that is now first presented to various advisory bodies.

The ban had already been announced several times, but it looks like things are getting finalized and the ban will be put in motion next year. It is not yet certain how this will be regulated, but more details will come out as the date of the texting and cycling ban approaches. The ban will also be extended to tram drivers and drivers of all vehicles for the disabled.

The use of a mobile phones by cyclists was not initially forbidden due to the belief that they were less at risk because they travel at low speeds.

Even though the Netherlands is considered a safe place to cycle, and there is a strict moral code to the do’s and don’ts of cycling in Holland, the ban on smartphones while cycling will still be implemented.

This new ban comes just months after Amsterdam announced that it will be banning scooters from its cycling paths.
