A heatwave in the Netherlands this week? Is that even possible?

A heatwave in the Netherlands probably sounds impossible to many people. But according to KNMI we just might be expecting one this week! Might!

What is considered a heatwave in the Netherlands?

Now before you get all too excited (especially if you come from a hot country) heatwaves are a bit different in Holland. In order for a heatwave to classify as a heatwave in the Netherlands, the temperature must be 25 degrees Celsius or higher for five days in a row. During three of the five days, the temperature must also reach 30 degrees Celsius or above. And that is what is considered a heatwave in Holland. (weaklings!)

However, before you get all too excited once again, this will not be a national heatwave but only a regional one. It is expected for the heatwave to occur only in the south of the country and perhaps also in the center of the Netherlands (sorry the rest of NL). So, to whoever lives in these regions – get ready for (somewhat) hot weather (hopefully).

What to do when there’s a heatwave in the Netherlands

Heatwave or not, we’re just grateful the sun will be out for a whole week! And there is plenty to do in the Netherlands when the weather is actually nice. The first thing on the list is (of course) going to the beach! The Netherlands has some pretty amazing beaches, that in the summer are full of life and host multiple fun events. But if you’re not a people person and prefer a more quiet setting, the Netherlands has that too. There are some pretty awesome urban beaches near Amsterdam that are not as packed and will (hopefully) offer you the piece and quiet you’ve been looking for.

The lovely weather is also a good reason to go and visit some castles around the Netherlands. Yes, castles! Holland has quite a lot of them and they’re breathtaking. Or if castles freak you out (because ghosts), you can go on a fun day trip. There are many lovely places to see near Amsterdam that are perfect for a short day trip. Just don’t forget to bring sunglasses and extra water, just in case it actually gets that hot.

For the rest of us that do not live in the heatwave perimeter, here is what to expect in the following days. Today (Monday) the highest temperature is supposed to reach 27 degrees Celsius. Tomorrow (Tuesday) it’s going to be 25 degrees Celsius and that’s just about as ‘heatwavy’ as it will get for us. The rest of the week (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday) the temperature will supposedly range between 20 and 23 degrees Celsius. The weekend is also looking quite pleasant with a range of 22 to 23 degrees Celsius, and not a cloud in sight. However, keep in mind that the weather forecast (especially in the Netherlands) is not always that accurate in summers, and most of the time it gets hotter than initially predicted.

However, one thing is for sure. The Dutch are going to enjoy this weather in the most Dutch way possible. Wonder what that means? Here is a video explaining how the Dutch spend their hot summer days.

Does this classify as a heatwave for you? What will you be doing during the following sunny days? Let is know in the comments below!
