If you’re a frequent flyer at Eindhoven Airport, 2027 is not going to be your year. The airport, which often offers cheaper and alternative flights for travellers from the Netherlands, will shut for five and a half months next year.
Yep, between February and July of 2027, you’re going to have to kiss those much-beloved Ryanair flights goodbye.
According to the airport, this is due to large scale works on the runway.
Work to future-proof the airport
In a press release, the airport explains that during this period, the airport will carry out major maintenance on the runway to widen it, manage waterlogging, and even add an aircraft arrest system for military fighter jets.
But that’s not the only reason why you’ll be forking out extra money to fly from Schiphol instead, as Frédérique Portheine, Airport Operations Manager at Eindhoven Airport, explains:
“The airport is gaining an extra taxiway so that aircraft need to cross the runway less frequently. That is more efficient and safer. Lights will be installed in the runway, among other things, allowing landings to take place even in dense fog.”
While the airport is nice and quiet, work will also be carried out to finish the terminal expansion. So hey, both you and the planes will have more room once it opens up again.
What does this mean for you?
Well, quite simply, you’re going to have to fly from somewhere else during this time period.
As the airport writes, “passengers from the region can travel via other airports during this period, allowing their journeys to proceed.” (Elsewhere).
The suspension of air traffic will last until July 19, 2027.
