BREAKING: Large wildfire breaks out in North Limburg, spreading rapidly

Emergency services are fighting the flames

A large and wildfire is currently raging in the North Limburg village of Oostrum. The fire broke out in the Rosmolen nature reserve at 11:45 AM.

There has been a large scale emergency response to the fire, with a firefighting helicopter deployed to help combat the flames.

“It is burning quite fiercely,” a spokesperson tells NOS, “the wind is picking up and the fire is still spreading.”

People asked to stay away, no trains running

Emergency services are asking that people remain away from the area. They have also evacuated a nearby campsite, and will continue to carry out evaluations to see whether more evacuations are necessary.

Trains have also come to a halt between Boxmeer and Venray, with services not expected to resume until at least 6 PM.

A crown fire

According to NOS, the fire is believed to be a crown fire. This means that it is spreading between the tops of trees, and can spread quickly.

It is expected that it will take a long time to extinguish the fire. Fire units from various provinces and regions are on site.
