No trains between Arnhem and Utrecht for almost two weeks this October

Alternative routes are best, says NS

If you regularly commute between Arnhem and Utrecht, brace yourself: no trains will run this route from Tuesday, October 20, to Saturday, October 31, while ProRail works on the tracks.

The work is happening in two phases, so different sections will go quiet at different times. In the meantime, the NS will deploy replacement buses to bridge the gap.

Here’s when the trains stop

From 1 AM on Tuesday, October 20, until 5 AM on Saturday, October 24, no trains will run between Driebergen-Zeist and Arnhem Centraal. The route between Driebergen-Zeist and Rhenen will also be out of service.

Meanwhile, from Saturday, October 24, until the morning of Sunday, November 1, no trains will run between Arnhem Centraal and Ede-Wageningen.

If you want to avoid the worst of the crowds, the NS suggests taking an alternative route. According to NOS, you can travel via ‘s-Hertogenbosch (Den Bosch) if you’re heading to Utrecht, and via Deventer if you’re going to Amsterdam or further.

Replacement buses are also available

Replacement buses leave Arnhem Centraal from two spots: the Sonsbeekzijde (the Sonsbeek side of the station) and the bus terminal.

As reported by NS, the departure side is subject to change depending on the period:

  • October 20 to 23: Buses to Driebergen-Zeist (towards Utrecht) leave from the Sonsbeek side, while express and local buses to Ede-Wageningen leave from the bus terminal.
  • October 24, 25 and 31: The express bus to Ede-Wageningen (towards Utrecht) leaves from the Sonsbeek side, and the local bus to Ede-Wageningen leaves from the bus terminal.
  • October 26 to 30: The express bus to Veenendaal-De Klomp (towards Utrecht) leaves from the Sonsbeek side, while express and local buses to Ede-Wageningen leave from the bus terminal.

Planning to take your bike along? Helaas, there’s no room for bicycles on NS buses.

If you have limited mobility, expect a high step onto the bus and longer walks to and from it. NS Reisassistentie (the NS travel assistance service) can help, and you can reach it on 030 235 7822.
