Forget complaining about Dutch weather, whining about train delays, and heated debates about fireworks. What really unites the people is a solar eclipse.
Last night, the Netherlands experienced a rare sight: an 88% partial solar eclipse (and a meteor shower).
The result? Some wholesome and hilarious videos.
A people momentarily united
It didn’t matter who you were or how you felt about things; if you weren’t working yesterday evening, chances are you took to the streets last night (along with all those neighbours you’ve never met).
Amsterdam looked like something out of the start of a disaster movie, with everyone emerging out of their homes and onto the street.
Amsterdam in particular became quite the rave.
But of course, this is Amsterdam we’re talking about, so there were some queues involved.
And it wasn’t just Amsterdam
However, it wasn’t just the capital that saw people coming out in droves.
Take Haarlem, for example:
Many took to Scheveningen to see the eclipse, and we can’t blame them.
And there were some interesting… alternatives to be found
Many of us weren’t fortunate enough to find eclipse glasses in time this year. However, the Dutch are known for being innovative, and that certainly showed last night…
And don’t forget the good old… CD option???
I personally kept to the shadows of Leiden to enjoy the eclipse.
