Woman (42) drowns while saving children in the Waal

It is not known if she knew the children

A 42-year-old woman from the Dutch town of Lunteren has drowned after saving children from the Waal river near Ochten.

According to RTL Nieuws, police report that the woman came to the aid of some children who were playing near a groyne in the water.

The safety region has previously warned that it is not safe to swim in the river due to the strong currents and suction effect of the ships passing through it.

Found lifeless shortly after

The relationship between the women and children is unclear, however, once she had brought the children to safety, she is reported to have disappeared under the water.

According to police, her body was later found lifeless in the water. A spokesperson for the local safety region tells RTL Nieuws that resuscitation attempts failed.
