You’ll soon be able to go surfing in the centre of Rotterdam!

After eight years, it will soon be possible to commute along the Steigersgracht in Rotterdam via surfboard!

Yes, we’re dead serious. It was up in the air for over eight years, but the decision has been made: we’ll all be able to go to the Rotterdam Market Hall and surf!

What will it look like?

The project’s name is RiF010, and the dreamer behind it is Van Viegen, who is a surfer himself, AD reports.

His idea is to create a surf spot in a wave pool in the Steigersgracht canal, so people can surf around in the Rotterdam sun (or rain).

It will be possible to rent a board or use your own and enjoy Rotterdam in a completely new (and a bit bizarre) way.

The canal will also be made suitable for kayaking, rafting and diving lessons! The first waves are coming in two years time.

Is it really that windy?

While we certainly have way too much windy weather in the Netherlands, believe it or not, that wouldn’t be enough to generate natural surfing waves in the middle of Rotterdam.

Water in the pool will be pumped back to wave installation pipes under the canal. The water is then pumped back to create surfable waves.

Water experts have calculated that 1.5 metres would be the ideal wave height, so all going to plan, the surfers will be able to stay on their board for 8 to 9 seconds.

Who is making this tropical dream come true?

Recreating the waves of a Hawaiin island in the centre of Rotterdam sounds costly,

The good news is that the wave machine will run on green electricity, so this project is not the reason why we won’t have Christmas decorations this year.

Van Viegen, RiF010’s CEO, does not want to say how much the project will cost. All we do know is that some people must have invested big bucks in order to make their surfing dreams a reality.

“The financing has been completed thanks to a group of Rotterdam investors. In the summer of 2024, we can go on the water. I can not wait. The first wave is for me,” Van Viegen tells AD.

Not everyone is equally excited

Some neighbourhood locals worry that their gezellig home area will turn into a fun park because of the noise pollution, and they tried to stop the project.

Two tourists shot in the centre of Amsterdam, shooters still on the run

A shooting took place in Amsterdam’s Oude Turfmarkt last night, Tuesday, 18 October. Two tourists were reportedly injured by stray bullets, but the perpetrators haven’t been caught yet.

The shooting took place at around 6.45 PM, with many citizens in the area hearing the gunshots, reports De Telegraaf

Two tourists injured

According to AD reporter Martin Damen, the two victims were tourists who were caught in the crossfire of stray bullets.

One of the victims was left severely injured. They were taken to hospital, and an ambulance was called to the site of the shooting.

Translation: Amsterdam centre. Two tourists injured by flying bullets in #shooting between two people who ran shooting one after the other during the busy evening rush hour through Taksteeg towards Rokin tonight at 6.45 PM. Old Turf Market. Victim has been taken by ambulance to hospital.

Another person suffered minor injuries. However, after being assessed by paramedics, they were able to be interviewed by police.

Keep an eye out

The police are currently looking out for the shooters. They were described as dark-skinned, estimated to be in their 20s, and one was wearing a baseball cap, according to AD.nl. A description of them has been posted to Burgernet.

People have been warned not to approach anyone who looks like the suspect but to call 112 first.

Cause unknown

The shooting doesn’t seem to be a targeted action. “We don’t think the perpetrator came to the centre to shoot anyone here,” says a spokesperson from AD.

With innocent people being targeted for seemingly no reason, this reassurance may leave many of us feeling a little wary.

Second shooting in a week

This is the second time in less than seven days that we’ve reported on shootings in major areas in Amsterdam.

Just last weekend, a shooting took place at Amsterdam Centraal, and the gunmen have not been arrested for that yet.

We can only hope that the people injured will recover and that the police can track down the perpetrators.

In other news, a video of a Dutch trucker ‘masturbating’ on the A7 went viral

Yesterday, a Dutch driver went viral on social media after a video was taken of him sticking his hands (and pants) out of his moving truck and making… masturbating movements… on the motorway. 🥴

As much as we enjoy looking up masturbating truckers first thing on a Wednesday morning, we decided to let you guys do your own digging if you really want to see the video (cough, cough — it’s on Dumpert.)

The video garnered more than 100,000 views on the platform, and the driver, who was an employee of the Van Straalen de Vries Transport for four years, has now consequently been fired from his job.

He let his intrusive thoughts win…

According to NU.nl, the video was made on the A7 near Zaandam and was recorded by friends of the man who drove the truck.

Now, if you’re wondering how the man managed to “do all that” while his truck continued to speed down the motorway, a student driver sitting in the passenger seat took over the wheel.

As far as the evidence shows, the driver did not actually masturbate out of his truck. Instead, he was simulating an act of masturbation while on the road. Phew, what a relief! 😮💨

Police to investigate the jerking trucker

Police are investigating whether the video violates Article 5 of the Road Traffic Act — which is normally used for people who engage in road behaviour that poses a great threat to other drivers.

“We want to verify the authenticity of the images and hear [from] the driver about his handling”, a spokesperson tells NU.nl.

Currently, it’s not yet known when or if the driver will be heard, but one thing’s for sure: his heinous act cost him his job and the respect of basically everyone who saw the video.

“It goes without saying that we cannot and will not tolerate this kind of situation in any way. We distance ourselves from this in any way. It is perilous what he has done”, Van Straalen de Vries of VSDV, tells NU.nl

The Netherlands is about to say goodbye to this controversial energy treaty

The Netherlands is leaving the controversial Energy Charter Treaty (ECT), as it stands in the way of the global 1.5-degree target set in the Paris climate agreement.

The Dutch Minister of Climate, Rob Jetten, has officially announced his wish to withdraw the Netherlands from the agreement, which purpose is to facilitate global energy cooperation, writes the NOS.

Why is the ECT controversial?

The ECT has been in bad weather recently, as it ensures financial support to fossil fuel companies that see their income drop due to government-mandated climate efforts.

READ MORE | 9 surprisingly unsustainable Dutch habits

In other words, the agreement states that countries like the Netherlands have to pay up to the biggest polluters on earth if they want to make progress in the sustainable energy field — hence the controversy.

This is making governments hesitant to shift economies away from the fossils, from fear of being slapped back by massive bills. Needless to say, environmentalists have not been too happy about this deal, with some even nicknaming it the “anti-climate agreement”.

Pay up!

The agreement has created quite the example out of Italy, which had to pay a baffling €240 million to a British oil company. But it doesn’t end there! Now, the same company is claiming the incomprehensible amount of €1.4 billion from the Dutch government.

READ MORE | The easy guide to the Dutch nitrogen crisis, farmers’ protests, and more

The reasoning behind these claims is that companies in the fossil fuel sector have the right to demand compensation for cash lost on investment and on lost income.

Aight, imma head out

Even though the ECT is currently being revised, to make life a little bit less super-comfortable for the fossil fuel industry, Minister Jetten wants to withdraw the Netherlands from the agreement sooner rather than later.

READ MORE | 17 ideas that make the Dutch sustainability super-heroes

Several European countries have already left, and Jetten is currently waiting for other EU states to join the Netherlands in the big exit.

However, it wouldn’t be sustainability news without a slightly depressing twist: although the withdrawals are good news for the climate cause, fossil fuel companies can still continue to claim reimbursements up to 20 years after the Netherlands has left the agreement. Ouch.

Orca washes ashore and dies in Zeeland; currently being examined in Utrecht

0

An orca was washed ashore at Cadzand beach in Zeeland and died on Sunday evening, despite the efforts of animal rescuers.

A few people noticed the 5.17 metre-long orca swimming on the beach on Saturday. After hours of trying to keep her wet with the local fire brigade, the animal savers couldn’t save her.

The orca was transported to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Utrecht after it died, according to the NOS

What happened?

It is still unknown why the orca was swimming so close to the beach.

“The big question is, of course, what caused the orca to get stranded.” says researcher Lonneke IJsseldijk from the University of Utrecht.

READ MORE | A new tourist: humpback whale spotted off the coast of Zeeland

At first sight, this might be an orca on a day trip. They usually reside in the northern part of the North Sea – making the Netherlands some sort of Mediterranean tulip coast. They can travel over 100 kilometres a day, so it’s just a short swim for them.

In the following days, researchers will be studying the orca’s body to find out what happened. While the studies are still ongoing, it seems like the orca was washed ashore due to some sort of illness.

We imagine our 2000-kilo friend just couldn’t resist the temptation – which sadly proved fatal.

Rare visitor

It is very rare for an orca to wash up on the Dutch coast. The last time it happened was in 2010. This time the skeleton will eventually be kept and conserved by Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden.

Dutchies with stomach reductions want discounts…at all-you-can-eat restaurants

The number of people in the Netherlands that choose to have a gastric bypass is rising — and with it the number of “all-you-can-eat” restaurants. These restaurants don’t usually offer discounts to Dutchies with stomach reductions.

And this oversight, according to Omroep West, makes Dutchies VERY angry. Anything for a good korting (discount), right? 😉

The meat and potatoes of the issue

All-you-can-eat restaurants typically charge customers a set price for their food. This doesn’t take into account people that have had gastric bypasses, who generally eat very small meals.

In fact, the chairwoman of Stichting Bariatie Groep Nederlands (the Dutch Bariatric Group Foundation) even told Omroep West that stomach reductions and all-you-can-eat meals don’t go together.

But Dutchies that want the most bang for their buck have their (pitch)forks raised at this discrimination and are demanding discounts.

Opinions are more divided than split peas

Shabu Shabu in the Hague told Omroep West that they used to have a discount scheme…up until people started abusing it willy-nilly. (See people — this is why we can’t have good things!)

Leiden’s Yuniko, a sushi restaurant, also abolished its discount scheme three years ago. They said it was becoming increasingly difficult to prove if people were lying about having had the surgery, just to take advantage of some spicy kortingen (discounts).

However, Samen in Delft and Eten Enzo in Zoetermeer see things quite differently.

An employee from Eten Enzo even stressed to Omroep West that they want to accommodate such people, even if there isn’t an overwhelming demand for it.

Office bribe: employers try to attract workers back to the office with smoothie bars and nap units

Post-COVID 19, what do workers want that’ll get them back to office spaces? Well, it looks like these companies have the answers: smoothie bars, coffee gardens, and power nap units!

Employers are doing everything they can to make the office appealing to workers and entice them to leave their homes after years of home-working, reports the NOS

Office spaces have become more of a social area

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, office spaces have become a place for workers to meet, talk, and socialise, rather than a place purely for work purposes.

With many companies offering hybrid work models, employees can work from the comforts of their homes a few days a week, but meet in the office to catch up with co-workers.

And employers want to adapt the office space to make room for more chats! 🗣

Jeroen Peters, director of marketing and communication at D&B, a facility services provider, came up with the idea to have a ‘culture club’ for his employees.

“With activities and training, you can spread your culture among employees. Think of drinks, but also games, breakfast sessions, movie nights and padel lessons,” Peters says.

Why work in the office when you could work from home?

The question remains; how would you lure workers into the office when their homes are so comfortable?

Everything they could need is right there — comfy chairs to work from, good coffee, good music, and, even better, pants are an option at home. 🩳🚫

The town hall in Amstelveen is an example of an office space incorporating comfort, and intrigue, into the office to encourage workers to commute from their homes.

Workers can sit and enjoy the facilities available in a Japanese garden, a library garden, and a coffee garden — all in their office area! In one garden, they even have the seats of an old Boeing 747 to recreate an aviation lounge.

That’s one way to get people to the office!

Labour shortages

With stress on employers due to worker shortages, they are turning to new solutions to encourage workers to get into the office.

According to a recent study by recruitment agency Robert Half, more than half of senior management employees expect it will be even harder to find people to fill roles in offices by 2023.

Basically, it’s a HR nightmare. But, with better facilities for employees to gather and socialise, it might just get people out of the home office! 🛌

How the energy crisis stole Christmas: the NL to cut down on light decorations to save energy

The Netherlands plans to put Christmas lights on for less time than usual this year to conserve energy. 💡

The lights are one of the main things that make the yuletide season so special.

However, as woners continue to suffer from sky-high bills, the government has no choice but to make some sacrifices in order to cut energy costs.

Dark times call for…fewer lights

As the colder months approach, it’s almost time to bring out those dusty festive decorations from the basement. 🎄

Though, people in the Netherlands will need to get used to having less time to admire Christmas lights in their cities this year.

READ MORE | Christmas in the Netherlands: the merriest bits

In Groningen, the lights will turn on from 3 PM to 9 PM rather than the usual, 1 PM to 12 AM, and this will be the case for most cities in the lowlands.

The Dutch city of Deventer will also see its light time halved, and they’ll hold off decorating 120 trees and facades. As a result, they’ll be able to save a third of the energy consumption.

“In the winter, we will have 160,000 people in the centre who are confronted with a bill of hundreds of euros at home. We want to avoid moments of irritation, which are very understandable”, centre manager of Deventer, Peter Brouwer, tells the NOS.

Nijmegen will turn its lights on for 11 weeks instead of 13 weeks and for only six hours a day instead of the usual eight — saving more than 35% of energy! ⚡

Experimenting with LED lights

Many business associations are also looking to switch to LED lighting to save on energy costs.

“It has been a topic of discussion, but LED does not have a huge impact on electricity costs,” Maarten Mulder, city centre manager of Nijmegen, tells the NOS.

Christmas lights are here to stay

One of the main reasons why Christmas lights aren’t being turned off altogether is because businesses actually rely on them to make their shops attractive to customers during the cold season.

“If a street doesn’t look good, people don’t go shopping there either. The cosiness is also in self-interest”, Maarten Hajer, professor of Urban Futures at Utrecht University, tells the NOS.

That being said, we can rest assured knowing that, even though the lights will burn for fewer hours, they’ll be around for that cosy winter feeling. ❄️
